Don’t bypass custom cabinetry for the ready-made stuff. The cheap stuff won’t last, and people are always surprised to find that the price differential for custom work is actually not that great.—Charlie Malca
Charlie Malca can craft just about anything out of wood that you can imagine. Since opening his business in 1990 he has built everything from closets to pantries to bookshelves—he even helped restore a 400-year-old ship in Sweden, which required craftsmanship similar to that used by the original builders—but his specialty is custom cabinetry.
Charlie is an old school carpenter. Before he even picks up a tool, he thinks carefully and practically about what he is building and how it will be used in the space. He crafts his projects out of high quality woods he selects himself at affordable prices, passing those savings on to his customers. Charlie has a keen eye for matching stains and grains, and can seamlessly match old cabinetry with new, which makes him invaluable on restorations and remodels. He also happens to be highly skilled in wood veneering, a disappearing craft.
Charlie considers patience one of his best tools, and never takes shortcuts in his work. This doesn’t mean Charlie drags out jobs—he gets right to work and finishes quickly and efficiently without ever sacrificing quality. His work is highly regarded by designers, contractors and homeowners. Charlie is warm and solid and has a nice patina, like a good piece of wood. Clients enjoy having him around.
I had my hall closet converted to shelves for linens, 5 drawers for all the rest of the bathroom & bedroom clutter. Charlie did a beautiful job. He's professional in all regards and knows his work. Very easy to work with. Listens to you and responds with alternatives if needed. Highly recommend him. 5 Stars.

Not only is Charlie an excellent craftsman, he is always available if there's a problem--even ten years later. I wanted to put a larger TV in the cabinet that he made, and he came out the next day to find a solution.

I found Charlie through Neighbor2Neighbor and I'm so thankful I did. My husband and I purchased a home that didn't have a closet in the master bedroom. We enlisted Charlie to build a custom built-in wardrobe and we're thrilled with the way it turned out. Its beautiful, well-designed and sturdy. Charlie was a pleasure to work with - knowledgeable, kind, punctual, reliable, and honest. I can't wait to work with Charlie again!

Charlie was great. He was on time, friendly and extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I had to cut down the size of a kitchen cabinet to fit in a new refrigerator. Charlie matched the existing cabinet perfectly and repaired several other kitchen cabinets. His work was of the highest quality and workmanship. I would recommend Charlie for any custom cabinet or closet work. In addition, he was a pleasure to work with, and he also ended up saving me hundreds of dollars through referrals to other neighborhood businesses for cabinet staining and hardware purchases. He's an all-around helpful and knowledgeable craftsman.

Charlie Malca made built-in bookshelves for us and we love how they came out. He was excellent to work with, listened to my ideas, offered his expertise, always arrived on time, went with me to pick out moulding, and worked hard to complete the job. His pricing was fair, and if we ever have another project, we would definitely work with him again.

Charlie made custom built-in bookshelves for us and they are MAGNIFICENT! He was a sincere joy to have in our home. He's a very seasoned and experienced carpenter. He was very collaborative and listened to our needs and asked the right questions. 2 years later-our bookshelves look amazing—no issues. Charlie also happened to be the most reasonably priced carpenter, which is usually not the case. We would use him again in a heartbeat and look forward to it!

Charlie is professional, friendly, and very skilled. He is busy so it may take a while from the time of the estimate to the service, but he was upfront and candid about his schedule. When he said he was going to do something or show up, he always would right on time. And his work is great. He built me some rock solid shelves and a canvas rack for my girlfriend's paintings. And he is quick—only took him a few hours.

I am extremely satisfied with Charlie. He is currently working on re-doing a cabinet in our guest bedroom area. What I appreciate the most is his knowledge, and the depth of detail he uses to solve a problem. He has a wealth of experience that he draws on in his work, and he is very pleasing to have around.

I found Charlie through nieghbor2neighbor and had a wonderful, collaborative experience remodeling my kitchen with him. Since my house was built in 1923 and is on a hillside, nothing is quite straight. But, Charlie's craftsmanship was stellar as he worked meticulously to make sure the cabinets all lined up correctly, which was no easy task. He's personable, knowledgeable and trustworthy, with excellent design ideas. He's also reasonably priced. And he knows more about wood than anyone I've ever met.

I found Charlie through neighbor2neighbor a little over a year ago. Since then, we've done four projects together and are planning to complete at least two more this year. I first hired Charlie to refurbish some 50's style built-in cabinetry in a rental unit. He completely rebuilt the drawers and cabinets in the bathrooms, bedrooms, and kitchens of three apartments. He was able to work with the existing style, color, and framing to create a beautiful, custom look. His work was so excellent, I was able to raise the rent after he finished! Since that first job, I've hired Charlie to work on additional rental properties and plan to use him for projects in my own home. I've also referred him to my friends and clients who want excellent, high-quality work. I know he will always do the job right for a reasonable price.

Following a recommendation from a close friend and designer, Charlie helped me finish my kitchen after a remodel. Although I replaced the appliances, I wanted to re-use my old cabinets. Charlie patched some of the cabinets to once again fit flush against my new appliances. He also made beautiful custom veneers for my refrigerator doors. It wasn't a huge job, but Charlie was excellent. He is quite adept, very professional and also fun and affable. Charlie has an interesting history with his craft, and I enjoyed our conversations in addition to his workmanship.

Charlie is a national treasure. I had a new dishwasher and previously it had a panel that matched all the wood cabinets. I wanted to retain the same wood since I had the original panel and another piece of the matching lumber that would be attached. Several cabinet people looked at my job but didn’t want to use the original panel and wanted to substitute another type of wood that they thought they would match. Since the cabinets are Italian and the wood is Euro, I wanted to use what I had previously. Charlie was the only person who looked at it, said he could do it and delivered. He’s not a just a craftsman but an artist who takes great pride in his work. I can’t say enough about him! He’s careful and he’s on time. It took a year to find him but he’s worth it.

I can't thank you enough for letting us know about Charlie Malca. Besides being reliable, trustworthy and having extremely fair pricing, Charlie is an artisan. He knows everything about different types of wood and elegant furniture making and finishes. They just don't make craftsman like Charlie anymore, they're a dying breed.
Charlie did every custom piece that we wanted on the kitchen and did an impeccable job. He matched our 1940¹s kitchen to a "t" when he did the add-on work. He custom carved the designs in the wood and matched the old 60's tile and grout perfectly for the counter. The quality, care and craftsmanship that go into his work are remarkable.
What a gem!!

I got Charlie's phone number from one of my clients. He did some cabinets, closets and counters in a very sophisticated doctor’s office in Beverly Hills. Let me tell you: if he wasn't good, I wouldn't call him back. My reputation is only as good as my subs. If they don't do a good job, I am out of business. Because he does all the work himself, he develops a close relationship with the customer and with me. He is very good at what he does and likes his job. I value his honesty and his experience.

Charlie was referred to me by an upholstery person I was working with. He custom designed a closet for me and did all the cabinet work on a remodel. He's just a wonderful person: honest, loyal, trustworthy and on time. He does impeccable work and I highly recommend him. I even leave him in my home when I am not there. He has become a friend. I've spent thousands of dollars with Charlie and trust him completely. He is accountable, responsible and returns calls within twelve hours, max! He is also very adaptable to suggestions and works within my budget.

I met Charlie while I was doing a huge job under the Hollywood sign. Since then we have worked on several smaller projects. I then was involved in remodeling a house built in the 30's. It had been a rental for 20 years and needed a lot of TLC. Charlie converted a small room into a walk-in closet, removing paneling and adding dry wall. He also had to redo some of the cabinet doors. He is especially great at matching things up with existing doors and walls. I then had him do some bookshelves in my own home. His prices are middle-of-the road, and his work is very, very good! I work with a lot of different people. Charlie sticks to his price and is consistent in all he does. He does exactly what I expect from him. And I trust him!

Charlie was recommended to me by my handyman. I had an old kitchen and wanted no structural work done, only cosmetic. Charlie built custom cabinets for walls that were not straight, cabinet by cabinet. I was satisfied with his prices. They were not excessive for what he did for me. He was always available and easy to reach by phone. He was promptly responsive to follow up calls and available for any adjustments. What makes Charlie special is that he is not just a cabinetmaker. He is a craftsman, with imaginative solutions to unusual problems. I have already referred him to others.

Charlie is a good man—very clever—and he does great work. He refaced my kitchen cabinets and painted them so they look like new! He made new drawers for an old maple cabinet I had, found the hardware at a good price and it came out perfectly. He designed and built a beautiful end table for me and rebuilt my pantry with lovely pull-out shelves, too. Charlie knows wood and knows how to work with it. He is punctual and honest. He gave me a fair bid and stuck to it. I left him many times alone in my house. Not only is he a nice man, but he can do anything with wood.

Charlie helped me redo my kitchen. I did not want all new cabinets, but I needed some custom made cabinets to match the existing ones with very specific sizes and details. I have some new appliances that I wanted to appear seamless, a perfect fit. The timing was tight—I needed this job done quickly. I was coordinating a lot of other work during this process. There are some good cabinetmakers out there, but many of them are slow. I did not have time to wait. Charlie is extremely reliable, responsible and easy to communicate with. I have already referred him to others. His prices are right in line with what he does. If you need a finish carpenter and custom cabinets in a hurry, Charlie is a skilled craftsman.
