Advocating for a Cleaner Bay and Beaches Since 1985
LOS ANGELES IS FAMOUS FOR ITS BEACHES, but it’s in large part thanks to Heal the Bay that we can safely enjoy our shoreline.
Since 1985, HtB has educated children and adults about pollution and its impact on our watershed, while advocating for a cleaner Santa Monica Bay.
Scientific data informs the group’s efforts to improve water quality. For example, HtB analyzes weekly samples of seawater from as far south as the Mexican border and north to Canada in order to measure bacterial count. They then inform the public about the cleanliness of the beaches through their Beach Report Card website (brc.healthebay.org).
HtB also organizes beach cleanup days during which hundreds of volunteers pick up trash on local beaches.
The group spearheaded the fight to improve the standards of the Hyperion Sewage Wastewater Treatment Plant, which upgraded its facility in 1998, leading to a great improvement in water quality and the return of kelp beds and fish in the bay.
In 2012 HtB successfully advocated to make Los Angeles the first large municipality to ban single-use plastic bags, one of the biggest causes of shoreline pollution. The state of California followed suit in 2014, potentially eliminating 13 billion plastic bags from the waste stream.

Volunteer
