In a city known for its concrete urban sprawl, TreePeople has been greening neighborhoods and schoolyards for decades. From its headquarters atop Coldwater Canyon, TreePeople’s dedicated team coordinates tree planting volunteers, hosts school groups and works with governmental agencies to make Los Angeles a healthier, more beautiful place to live.
Like so many Angelenos, we first learned about TreePeople when we participated in a tree planting at our kids’ elementary school. Later we chaperoned field trips to the demonstration gardens at the TreePeople headquarters and were impressed with their hands-on educational outreach. Indeed, our handbooks are printed on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper because TreePeople educated us about this highest standard in green printing.
Since its inception TreePeople has planted over two million trees. Their small team inspires thousands of people every year to volunteer their manpower to plant and tend trees in neighborhoods and schoolyards, and help restore habitat in the Santa Monica Mountains and Angeles National Forest. It’s rewarding to plant a sapling and watch it grow into a strong tree, providing oxygen, shade and beauty where there was once only concrete.
“TreePeople’s mission is to inspire, engage and support people to take personal responsibility for the urban environment, making it safe, healthy, fun and sustainable and to share the process as a model for the world.“
